A Malaysian Immersion Trip to Copenhagen

On the 11-13th of July 2018, Rainmaking in partnership with Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) hosted an Immersion Trip to Copenhagen with innovation & digital transformation leaders from Sime Darby Property, KPJ Healthcare, UEM Sunrise and Cyberview.

The goal was to showcase a flourishing innovation ecosystem that's not just limited to sexy startups but also the large and mature corporates that are unwilling to stay complacent and watch the world go by without them. 

In Copenhagen, large companies like Maersk, IKEA, Danske Bank and Tryg engage in corporate-startup initiatives as a means to innovate and accelerate growth for their business. 


Among the highlights from the trip; 

  1. Visit to our new corporate-startup coworking space - Pier 47, or as Michael Bak (Managing Director of Pier 47) calls it - the playground for corporates. It is made for companies who would like to park their business transformation teams away from the mothership and into a ready-made entrepreneurial setting, equipped with learning resources and bespoke events.
  2. Private session with Alex Farcet (Partner at Rainmaking) and Thomas Hougaard (Venture Partner & Senior Director at Maersk) on how Maersk have gone from being just a traditional transport giant to building, partnering and investing in ventures that possess great potential to create growth within the transport and logistics field 
  3. Talk by Ninna Wicki (Managing Director of The Hub) on how her team partnered with Danske Bank to expand their reach to an untapped ecosystem -- the startups. The platform acts as an ecosystem glue for startups, entrepreneurs and corporate innovators. It provides curated information on latest startup jobs, active investors, startup events, coworking options, acceleration options, innovation tools and many others. 
  4. Sharing session by Anders Valentin of UNDO who revealed the impact that was achieved from being granted the autonomy and trust by a 290 year-old Danish insurance giant, TRYG, to build an insurance platform for the Millennials (who by majority thinks traditional insurance is crap and a big scam). 
  5. Visit to Ramboll and their Virtual Solutions Lab while Niels Elmegaard and Thomas R Dünweber of Ramboll shared how the company's actively building internal innovation capabilities through Rainmaking's Internal Accelerator and Innovation Compass. 

Now back on Malaysian soil thinking - what better country to duplicate what we've seen in Copenhagen than here, a country so ripe for digital transformation within the corporate sector with an entrepreneurial ecosystem that's booming.

It's not mission impossible. With the recent reformation that's happening in the country, the Malaysians would know better than anyone that to see change, more leaders need to be brave to challenge the status quo.
